Who is this game for? This game board was designed for school and private practice speech-language pathologists (SLPs). In the schools children are often seen in small groups, but they usually are working on different goals. Although some people use well-known games, I have found that some children try to ignore practicing their speech goals because they focus only on playing the game. This game gives the SLP an element of novelty in the session. The themed game also might be a visual reminder to those children who are working on remembering the donkey story for a story retelling task.

How do you play? You can use the game with high or low-level groups. With higher level students who have language or learning problems usually I start with negotiating the rules with the group of children.

As a group (or with one child tasked as leader/secretary) we decide the consequences for each picture square. For example, if someone lands on a picture of the donkey, he gets to roll again; but if someone lands on the tiger, she has to return to the “start”. We record our decisions. As play begins, each child practices working on his or her speech goals (imitates a word, demonstrates fluency, or answers a question). The winner is the person who makes it to the pasture.

With a lower level group, we take turns rolling the die and moving our tokens around the board. Each child answers a question to practice a speech goal with each move.

What does the game come with? The game board comes with four plastic tokens, one die, and a clear plastic storage bag. The storage bag is large enough to store up to three copies of the Donkey Says No! books (not included).

How can you use the cards? The cards can assist children with story retelling, vocabulary concept, and memory activities. Because the art on the cards can be matched into pairs, you can use them to play memory matching games.

After the children hear or read the donkey story, you can deal out 1 to 12 cards and ask the child to put the cards in order and then retell the story.

You can hand the child one card and ask what happened before or after the picture. Another variation is to draw two cards from a random pile and ask what happened between the two pictures.
